January 6th, 2016 - The impending El Nino season has raised concerns for citizens throughout California. Some areas of the Cleveland will be heavily affected by the heavy rains, particularly burn areas that haven't yet recovered. Silverado Canyon is one area being closely monitored as a September 2014 fire burned 960 acres on the northern side. The fire consumed much of the vegetation and soil cover that typically reduce hazards due to rain, creating highly erosive soils on very sleep slopes. When rainfall events are predicted, please comply with evacuation orders and leave the canyon area to avoid risks to life.
As of December 14th 2015, the fire restrictions were downgraded to general, as the immediate threat of fire has passed with lower temperatures and increased rain. For more information, please read our most recent press release on Current Fire Restrictions
The Trabuco District will be closing the Indian Truck Trail gate (down near the bottom of the hill, close to the Forest Boundary in Temescal Valley, T5S, R6W, SE Sec 13, Alberhill Quad) and the North Main Divide gate (just above Falcon Group Campground, T6S, R6W, SE Sec 12, Alberhill Quad) in advance of the storms for visitor and employee safety and to maintain the integrity of the road system. These gates are typically closed when precipitation is expected, and under wet conditions, until they have chance to dry out.
On October 1st, 2015, the Cleveland National Forest, in conjunction with the Trabuco Ranger District, decided to extend the closure of the Silverado Canyon area in an effort to reduce the potential for loss of life, and loss of physical resources on the forest. For more information on this closure, please see Silverado Canyon Road Closure press release
Vehicle access on Forest Roads may be restricted due to wet road conditions and/or fire or resource damage. For information on the status of specific roads, please view our Forest Trail and Road Closures .
While the Orosco Ridge Shooting Area is closed, general recreation and hunting is not allowed. The Forest Service is maintaining the closure of the Orosco Ridge Recreational Target Shooting Area for an indefinite amount of time due to public safety concerns and the presence of hazardous materials.
The Forest Service has been working with interested parties to develop a plan for the future of public shooting on the District. The San Diego Sherriff’s Department conducted a firing range safety assessment and recommended that a number of safety related changes. Additionally, a representative of the National Rifle Association visited the site to provide an assessment of whether the shooting range meets NRA guidelines for safe target shooting. Once funding and resources are available, the Forest Service will continue to work on developing a future plan.
