The Rio Sabana picnic area, located on the south side of the Forest in the Municipality of Naguabo, has re-opened after completing mainteance work at the area.
The site offers picnic facilities, trail acess and scenic views. The area is operated under an agreement with the Municipality of Naguabo and facilities are open only on weekends during this time of year.
El Portal Rain Forest Center is now open to visitors. The Center is located on Rd-191 at Km. 4.0 in Rio Grande and provides information and maps for visiting the Forest, a movie, exhibits, store and food service facilities.
The Center is open daily from 9AM to 5 PM. Fees are $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors and youth 15 years and under are free.
Road 9966 which connects PR Rd 191 to PR Rd 186 (El Verde) via Jimenez is currently closed due to unsafe conditions resulting from a landslide.
Road repairs will begin on October 9, 2012 and will continue for several months. Neighbors in the Jimenez and El Verde areas of Rio Grande are advised to use caution when driving in or near the Forest as heavy machinery and trucks will be using these areas.
