El Yunque facilities, servcies and adminsintrative offices wil be closed on Christmas Day. Recreation facilities, including the El Portal Visitor Center, will be open on New Years Day and Three Kings Day (Jan 6).
El Portal Rain Forest Center is now open to visitors. The Center is located on Rd-191 at Km. 4.0 in Rio Grande and provides information and maps for visiting the Forest, a movie, exhibits, store and food service facilities.
The Center is open daily from 9AM to 5 PM. Fees are $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors and youth 15 years and under are free.
Road repairs have been completed to Rd 9938 which provides access to Mt Britton Trailhead. This road was recently re-opened and is now a one-way loop road.
When driving south on Rd 191 one way traffic begins near Km 12.6 where traffic signs direct traffic to turn right onto Rd 9938 and continue one way past the Mt Britton trailhead entrance and merges to the left onto Rd 191 near km 13. Follow Rd191 north (downhill) until two way traffic resumes around Km 12.6.
Parking for the Mt Britton trail can be found along Rd 9938. Designated parking spaces are signed and painted.
Road 9966 which connects PR Rd 191 to PR Rd 186 (El Verde) via Jimenez is currently closed due to unsafe conditions resulting from a landslide.
Road repairs will begin on October 9, 2012 and will continue for several months. Neighbors in the Jimenez and El Verde areas of Rio Grande are advised to use caution when driving in or near the Forest as heavy machinery and trucks will be using these areas.
