There has been an increase in bear activity on the Inyo National Forest.
Bear activity increased not only in campgrounds and trailheads, but in areas that do not normally receive heavy bear use. The extremely dry winter has decreased the available natural food sources for bears so they are looking for other food sources; this includes human food and trash!
STORE YOUR FOOD AND TRASH PROPERLY!!
Developed campsites have food storage lockers as well as bear-proof trashcans. Store all your food, including pet food, in the locker. Never leave food unattended at your campsite. As an added precaution store all scented items in the food storage locker as well, this includes sunscreen, bug-repellant, and toiletries. In areas without food storage lockers, put your coolers, food, and scented items in the trunk of your car. Bears are visual and they know what a cooler is and what could be inside!
