It is a good reminder to be aware of changing conditions when recreating in the outdoors, particularly in areas influenced by glacial fed rivers. Be sure to check weather conditions and be prepared with the 10 essentials anytime you travel into the outdoors. The dynamic rivers and streams fed from Mt. Hood glaciers can change significantly over the course of a day, and crossings may be passible one hour, and not passible later in the day. Visitors should familiarize themselves with river crossing safety techniques, and be willing to turn back if they observe warning signs of unsafe conditions. Please also review our river crossing safety document. As explained in a USGS briefing, the rivers fed by glaciers on Mt. Hood may cause some debris flows so we remind the public to use situational awareness and to be especially careful at river crossings.
