Greeley, Colo. (July 22, 2011) – Visitors to the Pawnee National Grassland are asked to use extreme caution while traveling on the roads of the district’s Bird Tour and consider the roads closed in some areas.

Recent storms have done significant damage to roads, causing up to 20 inch deep erosion deposits in spots. Damage is primarily located along roads 104 (between CR 57 and 69), 69 (between 104 and 96) and 96 (between 69 and CR 77) on the Bird Tour route. There are more than 25 spots at low crossings where damage has occurred. Many of these are typically dry this time of year; however, storms have brought heavy rains to the grassland in recent weeks.

Temporary repairs could start as soon as this weekend to create safer travel conditions. Due to the extent and expense of the damage, permanent repairs will take longer. Until the temporary repairs are completed, please stay out of the area for your own safety and to keep from causing additional damage.

For questions regarding where to travel on the Pawnee National Grassland, call visitor information services at 970-346-5000.
