Fort Collins, Colo. (October 27, 2011) – The Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland is planning to take advantage of changing weather conditions this fall and winter to burn slash piles left from multiple fuels reductions projects.
These piles were created from thinning treatments and are burned in an effort to reduce hazardous fuels. These piles are only ignited under certain conditions, including weather, fuel moisture, smoke dispersal and staffing. The areas are monitored after burning as well.
Firefighters will spend the upcoming months burning piles in a number of locations across the district. When and where burning occurs will depend on the conditions listed above. Crews may burn as many as 100 to 300 hand piles a day at each location if conditions are met, which includes a minimum of three inches of snow cover. Some areas of the district also have larger machine piles. Typically, one to 40 of these could be burned at each location a day with a minimum of six inches of snow cover.
Areas on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District with hand piles ready for burning are:
- Near Pinewood Springs
- Thompson River (near Pinewood Reservoir, west of Loveland)
- Estes Valley (Grizzly Gulch, Lake Pasture and Fish Creek)
- Pingree Hill (northwest of Rustic)
- Stringtown West (west of Masonville adjacent to Buckhorn Road)
- Panhandle Creek and Red Feather (near Crystal Lakes, northwest of Red Feather Lakes)
- Stub Creek (off the northern portion of the Laramie River Road)
- Bellaire, Chambers, Tunnel and Tom Bennett Campgrounds (approximately 20-60 piles each)
Areas with machine piles ready for burning are:
- Browns Park (adjacent to Glendevey)
- Crystal 4 (west of Beaver Meadows Recreation Area and Forest Service Road 169)
- Trout Creek (East of Eaton Reservoir and County Road 80C)
- West Beaver (South of Eaton Reservoir and adjacent to Forest Service Road 169)
If you have a smoke allergy or are concerned about burning in your area, please contact Reghan Cloudman at 970-295-6770 to get added to a contact list. Emails are sent out frequently to this list.
