Fire activity: The Woods Fire was discovered at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11 near Forest Road 195 northwest of Woods Canyon Lake on the Black Mesa Ranger District.
Driven by strong winds, the Woods Fire quickly spread to the north/northeast until it entered the footprint of the 2017 Alder Prescribed Burn, which immediately slowed the fire’s northern progress. Local community, county, state, and federal fire crews worked through the night Friday to complete a line around the fire.
Under the management of Type 3 Incident Commander, Ben Plumb, crews focused on reinforcing the established line and mopping up where possible through the weekend. Despite the high winds, the fire was successfully held within the initial fire line at 103 acres.
Today, management of the fire transitioned back to the Black Mesa Ranger District under Type 4 Incident Commander, Joshua Salazar. Several resources have been released from the fire and have been made available for response to other incidents. Fire activity remains light to moderate within the fire lines as unburnt fuels within the interior continue to consume. Smoke will continue to be visible at times.
Weather: The coming week is expected to be sunny, dry and breezy at times with high temperatures lingering around 70 degrees.
Safety: Visitors are reminded to drive with caution in the fire area and to be alert for fire traffic. Forest Road 195 was already affected by a public safety closure and was closed to the public prior to the start of the Woods Fire. No additional closures are in effect at this time.
Fire restrictions: The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests are currently in Stage 2 Fire Restrictions to reduce human-caused fires and protect public safety.
