Springerville, AZ; April 7, 2014—Access to the Big Lake, Crescent Lake or Mexican Hay Lake areas on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests via Highway 273 and 261 will be opened by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) on April 15.
These roads are closed annually for the winter season in anticipation of typically heavy snowfall. Although, this winter did not have much snowfall accumulation, the mid-April opening allows ADOT time to inspect the roads for any leftover snow drifts or downed trees and to complete road repairs.
Spring snow storms are not uncommon in the White Mountains. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests reminds recreationists to let someone know the route you are planning to take, and when you are expected to return. Weather conditions can change rapidly. Be prepared with a survival kit including extra food and water.
Drivers can call 511 or visit ADOT’s Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov for the latest highway conditions around the state.
