Madison Fire Update

Release Date: Sep 9, 2014

Contact(s): Leona Rodreick, Dave Sabo

The Madison Fire became more active over the last couple of days as temperatures remained in the 70’s and fuels continued to dry from the third wettest August in Butte history.  Smoke from the fire can be seen from the Delmoe Lake road and Interstate 90 between Homestake pass and the Pipestone exit.  Smoke has also been briefly seen from Butte beyond the East Ridge but remains three miles to the east of the ridge.  The warmer weather has increased the size of the fire to an estimated 21 acres.    “A cooling trend is expected midweek that will moderate fire behavior but temperatures back into the 70’s by this weekend will once again make the fire more active.” reported Butte/Jefferson District Ranger Dave Sabo.   “We are paying close attention to this fire as we may still have a month of warm weather ahead.”

Due to its remote location, steep slopes, rocky terrain, continuous dead fuels and lack of safety areas for firefighters, fire officials decided to monitor the lightning caused fire rather than place firefighters on the scene. The fire will continue to be patrolled from the air and from a distance on the ground.

The Dillon Dispatch Center is aware of the fire as they continue to coordinate management of this fire with firefighters. Additional information or questions can be directed to the Forest Service in Butte at (406) 494-0250 or Whitehall (406) 287-3223, or go online to www.inciweb.nwcg.gov.
