BKNF Travel Map—GPS Compatible
The Black Hills National Forest has released a forest-wide map that is compatible with some Garmin GPS units. This map contains only roads and trails (and their designations) on the Black Hills National Forest that are open to motorized travel.
The map is designed to be scalable (as you zoom in, more route features will appear), to reduce clutter when zoomed out to a small scale and increase drawing performance. If you feel that you are not seeing the data you intended, try zooming in.
Note: If you have background maps loaded in your GPS unit, various “roads” and “trails” with differing symbols may appear that are not open to motorized use. When in doubt, temporarily disable the background maps in the Map Setup Menu.
The map is designed for color GPS units. It will function in compatible grayscale units; however the road and trail symbology will be mostly lost. You will need to “hover” the pointer over specific roads or trails to obtain their designations.

This GPS Map Does Not Replace the Motor Vehicle Use Map
Users must remain in compliance with the official current Motorized Vehicle Use Map, and it is highly recommended that it be carried as a companion to this GPS map.
The MVUM is a legal document that identifies the roads and trails where motor vehicles are allowed. The GPS Travel Map does not replace the MVUM, which makes designations of roads, trails, and areas legally effective pursuant to 36 CFR 212.56 and 261.13. It is the user’s responsibility to be familiar with the current MVUM. Printed copies of MVUMs are provided free of charge at local Forest Service offices and on the internet at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/blackhills
