Dakota Fire Update 2

Rapid City, SD – Crews made significant progress on the Dakota Fire today.

The fire is estimated at 300 acres and 30% contained.

The fire is still burning north of Sheridan Lake between the lake and Highway 228 or Sheridan Lake Road. The fire team is working to contain the fire between Spring Creek to the east and Highway 385 to the west.

Personnel fighting the Dakota wildfire include: 15 overhead personnel, the Bear Mountain hand crew, a state hand crew, 2 Forest Service dozers, one helicopter and 3 Forest Service engines. Volunteer fire departments responding to the fire include Rapid Valley, Black Hawk, North Haines, Rockerville, and Whispering Pines.

A Type II fire team, on stand-by in Denver, was assigned to the fire and will arrive and assume operations of the fire this evening.

Additional smoke and flames from burn out operations will be seen this evening and tomorrow morning.

Sheridan Lake Recreation Complex sites on the north shore remain closed. This includes the beach, boat ramp, marina, group campground and picnic ground. The south boat launch is also closed. The south shore family campground, beach and picnic ground are open at this time. The Flume Trail and Centennial Trail between Upper Spring Creek Trailhead and Calumet Point remain closed.

A special order closing the north shore and east half of the lake was posted this afternoon. “We want to give the firefighters room to do their job and not have to worry about the public wandering into an unsafe situation,” David Slepnikoff, acting Mystic District Ranger said.

Fire Information Hours: 8AM – 9PM
NOTE: Fire Information is closed after 9PM. Unless an emergency, further updates will be provided tomorrow morning.

Spearfish, SD- Crews again made significant progress on the Crow Peak Fire today.

The fire is estimated at 130 acres and 65% contained.

Today firefighters continued to strengthen and reinforce control lines around the fire. Mop up efforts have begun on the north and east side of the fire.

Firefighter priorities are to provide for firefighter and public safety, protect heritage resources, and keep the fire from advancing to the west. The management strategy for the Crow Peak fire is full containment with aggressive suppression.

Cooler temperatures provided some relief to the fire fighters today but the area is rugged and steep making firefighting efforts challenging.

Reminder: Open fires are prohibited in the Black Hills Fire Protection District on National Forest land in South Dakota, except in designated recreational sites.

A new contact number has been assigned to the Crow Peak Fire. For more information call Bonnie Jones at (605) 517-9391.
