Public Urged to Practice Good Fire Prevention
Release Date: Apr 17, 2018
TAOS, NM – April 17, 2018 – For Immediate Release. Due to very dry forest fuel conditions and anticipated low moisture levels in weather forecasts, Carson National Forest officials urge the public to be vigilant while operating in and around the forest.
While conditions do not meet all the criteria necessary to enter into Stage I fire restrictions, Carson National Forest officials caution all forest visitors to be very careful with all campfires by limiting them to developed campsites, ensure campfire rings are properly built, and that no fires are ever left unattended. For example, put out campfires so they are “cool to the touch”.
Fire managers on the Carson National Forest are taking added precautions as well.
“All planned prescribed burns are on hold until conditions allow,” said James Duran, Carson National Forest supervisor. “We’re hopeful the monsoons forecasted for July will arrive and allow us to resume prescribed burn operations later in the year. In the meantime, however, the public can still access and enjoy the forest.”
“All we ask is that the public ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the forest for everyone by practicing good fire prevention,” he said.
Several criteria are used to determine when to implement fire restrictions, including fire activity levels, current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, and the availability of firefighting resources. Fire restriction criteria is routinely evaluated and restrictions could be implemented at any time. Therefore, forest visitors should check with the local district office in the area they plan to visit to see if fire restrictions are in effect.
