Current status: Yesterday hand firing operations focused on reinforcing portions of the containment lines along Forest Road 559 and on the east flank of the fire. A cold front is expected to push southeastward through the southern Tusas Mountains and the fire location this evening, bringing gusty and erratic winds. Crews will monitor and patrol the fire and engage with hand firing operations based on fire activity and weather conditions.
Resources from the Gurule fire responded to a new start yesterday, named the Potrero Fire. The Potrero Fire is located 7 miles northwest of El Rito, north of Potrero Falls on the El Rito Ranger District of the Carson National Forest. Firefighters engaged the fire last night, utilizing ground and helicopter resources from the Gurule Fire. The fire is approximately 12 acres and is burning in timber. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Advisories: Smoke may be visible from the communities of Abiquiu, Canjilon, Ojo Caliente, Cañon Plaza, Vallecitos, La Madera, and El Rito, Tres Piedras and may continue to show for several days. Smoke may settle into lower elevations and in drainage areas during the evenings but should lift by mid-morning.
