Maquinita Prescribed Burn
Release Date: Oct 14, 2014
Taos, NM, October 14, 2014-The Carson National Forest’s Tres Piedras Ranger District is planning the Maquinita prescribed burn project at the first available window in the next few weeks. Any prescribed burn plan can only be implemented when favorable weather, available resources and other conditions are met. The Maquinita project consists of 75 acres and is located west of Highway 64, 4 miles east of Hopewell Lake, and 11 miles Northwest of the community of Tres Piedras.
This burn is being conducted to reduce logging slash and debris within the Maquinita fuel wood unit and improve forest health by restoring fire to a fire adapted ecosystem. This will also help reduce the risk of a catastrophic fire impacting the community of Tres Piedras.
Smoke will be visible in Tres Piedras and surrounding communities. Motorists traveling in the area are cautioned as visibility may be impaired along west Highway 64 during burn periods.
For people with respiratory ailments, sensitivities to smoke, or otherwise concerned about air quality impacts, please visit the New Mexico Environment Department’s website at https://nmtracking.org/fire
