Prescribed Fire in the Wilderness Project

The Deschutes and Willamette National Forests are proposing to use prescribed fire in the Mt. Washinton and Three Sisters Wilderness.  The proposed project is called Prescribed Fire in the Wilderness: Scott Mountain and Cascade Lakes Planning Areas.    The project will use prescribed fire to protect wilderness values and reduce risk to values outside of the wilderness by modifying fuel conditions within the wildereness.  Modifying fuel loadings within the wilderness would allow fire to play its natural role in wilderness and improve safety conditions for firefighters when they are suppressing fires adjacent to wilderness.  According to t he 1964 Wilderness Act and Forest Service Policy lightning-caused fires should play, as nearly as poosible, their natural ecological role in wilderness and to reduct to an acceptable level the risk and onsdquesnces of wildrifre with wilderness.  The public is being asked to provide any concerns, questions, or suggestions during the projects scoping period, which lasts until Feb. 15, 2013.
