Red Rock District to accept applications for outfitter/guides
Release Date: Jan 22, 2015
The Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest is preparing to issue a prospectus for commercially-guided educational tours and trailhead transportation services.
Individuals and businesses wishing to provide these services will have the opportunity to apply for an outfitter/guide permit with the district starting Feb. 2, 2015.
Anyone may apply to the prospectus, and applications will be accepted until close of business on Mar. 18, 2015. Applicants may apply for permits related to the educational hiking tours, transportation services, or both.
In recent years, forest users have expressed a desire for guided hikes providing interpretive and educational information, as well as a need for transportation services to alleviate congestion and crowding at popular trailheads.
Hiking tours must focus on natural resources education. Topics may include botany, wildlife, geology, and similar subjects. Forest Service system trails across the district are available for this opportunity; the prospectus will contain a list of trails that are not available due to high levels of existing use. Overnight camping will also be considered for remote or backcountry locations.
Trailhead transportation services are intended to improve public access to trail-based recreation opportunities. They may be offered as an on-demand, taxi-type service or as a regularly-scheduled circulator. All Forest Service system trailhead locations on the Red Rock Ranger District are available for this opportunity.
Early applications cannot be accepted, but potential applicants can learn more about the opportunity prior to the prospectus opening by visiting us online at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/outfitter-guide. Application instructions are listed on this page; the prospectus will be posted to this page when it is issued Feb 2.
