Sullivan Creek Stream Enhancement Field Trip

Release Date: May 17, 2018

Metaline Falls, WASH. (May 17, 2018) – The Forest Service and Seattle City Light are hosting a public field trip for the Sullivan Creek Large Wood Habitat Enhancement Project on Friday June 8, 2018 from 9:30 a.m.-noon.

The field trip will begin at the Sullivan Lake Ranger Station (12641 Sullivan Lake Road, Metaline Falls, Washington) on Friday June 8, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. and will start with an office presentation on the project. The presentation will be followed by field stops at several potential stream restoration locations, and one upland forest stand where wood for in-stream placement would be obtained.

The field trip will highlight the location and design of in-stream habitat restoration treatments at several locations in Sullivan Creek to improve watershed and aquatic function, fish habitat, and increase native fish populations. The project includes potential treatments at nine sites along Sullivan Creek and would include riparian tree felling, tree collection at uplands sites, and helicopter placement of wood.

This project is part of a broader effort to benefit native salmonids in tributaries of Boundary Reservoir under conditions in the Boundary Hydroelectric Project License (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Project No. 2144-038). Under this License, issued by the FERC in 2013, Seattle City Light developed a detailed plan to promote recovery of native fish population and improve aquatic function, in coordination with stakeholders to guide aquatic restoration actions. Large woody debris placement in Sullivan Creek is a key component of this plan.

While there is no hiking or extended walking planned, participants should come prepared for field conditions. Sturdy footwear, water, snacks and sunscreen are encouraged and a RSVP would be appreciated.
