Gainesville, Ga. (May 1, 2015) – Since last year, three individuals involved with break-ins and stolen property from vehicles at forest trailheads have been successfully prosecuted for federal crimes. In coordination with local sheriff’s offices, Shane Parker of Chatsworth; Mistie Watkins of Ellijay; and Burton Edwards of Chatsworth all plead guilty to their respective charges for a series of break-ins in Gilmer County, Murray County, and Fannin County. These individuals were involved with breaking into homes, breaking into cars, selling stolen firearms, purchasing stolen firearms, and controlled substances.

“We’re glad justice was served,” said District Ranger, Jeff Gardner. “Visitor safety is our number one priority.”

Both Parker and Edwards are now serving a combined total of over 7 years in federal prison for their roles in the 24 break-ins that occurred over 18 months.

“Visitors can help reduce the risk of crime through simple steps like not having valuables visible and not leaving travel plans on your windshield,” added Gardner.

Other tips include reporting the theft as soon as possible by calling 911, not parking with your trunk facing the woods, and leaving the glove compartment open and empty. More information about safety on the forest is available at go.usa.gov/3ZFbh
