Safford, AZ, June 30, 2016 - For Immediate Release. The Safford Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest will host the second in a series of meetings for the Columbine information displays project on Thursday, July 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The meeting is a follow-up to the initial kickoff meeting which was held on June 21. Those interested in the project are encouraged to attend and join the planning effort. The meeting will take place in the conference room of the Safford Ranger District Office, located at 711 S. 14 Avenue, Suite D, Safford, Arizona.
The Forest Service has worked cooperatively with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to secure funds to improve the interpretive displays at the Columbine Visitor Center, located at milepost 143.2 along Route 366/Swift Trail in the Pinaleño Mountains (Mt. Graham). Proposed improvements include an outdoor open-walled shade structure and interpretive panels, extension of the nature trail sidewalk around the existing parking lot, and improvement of displays inside the Visitor Center.
The information displays provide educational information regarding the natural, scenic, historic, and recreational qualities that characterize the Swift Trail as a scenic byway. Information may include details on logging camps, Native American cultural practices, biotic zones, wildlife species, hiking trails, history, and people and events that define the corridor as a scenic byway.
The Safford Ranger District is responsible for management of the Pinaleño (Dził Nchaa Si’an), Santa Teresa, Galiuro, and Winchester mountain ranges.
For more information please contact the Safford Ranger District at (928) 428-4150, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office is closed on federal holidays.
