National Get Outdoors Day June 14 on Coronado National Forest

TUCSON, AZ ( May 22, 2014) –The Coronado National Forest will waive the day-use fees associated with many recreation sites or amenities on the Forest in celebration of National Get Outdoors Day June 14, the next of several fee-free days this year.

This year’s fee waiver dates are as follows:

• National Get Outdoors Day – June 14;
• National Public Lands Day – September 27;
• Veterans’ Day Weekend – November 8 - 11.

Day-use fees will be waived at all standard amenity fee sites operated by the Forest Service for these listed dates. Concessionaire operated day-use sites may be included in the waiver if the permit holder wishes to participate.

Visitors to the Coronado National Forest are encouraged to contact the appropriate ranger district office to determine which recreation sites will have fees waived, and at which sites concessionaires will charge fees.

The Sierra Vista Ranger District will celebrate National Get Outdoors Day at Parker Canyon Lake from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. National Get Outdoors Day is intended to encourage children to recreate outdoors, and all activities will be free of charge.

A variety of opportunities will be offered. Arizona Game and Fish Department will host a fishing clinic. Raven’s Wild Way will lead nature walks at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Living reptiles will be provided by the Huachuca Herpetological Association. U.S. Border Patrol Sonoita station will set up an obstacle course. The Forest Service will also provide education and examples on low cost outdoor fun, and will engage children with interactive learning using moon sand, side walk chalk, water blobs, and water beads. Other activities include a BB gun range from the National Wild Turkey Federation, archery from JT’s Archery, and a harness to demonstrate how to pilot a hang glider from Southern Arizona Hang Glider Association. Additional partners bringing displays and activities include Ramsey Canyon Preserve, National Park Service, Huachuca Gem and Mineral Society and USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. National Get Outdoor Day will be a “fee free” day for Lakeview Campground.
