West Yellowstone, MT… The Hebgen Lake Ranger District is looking for your review and input on the Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the North Hebgen Multiple Resource Project. The documents propose reducing fuel loads in wildland urban interface (WUI) areas including along evacuation routes and in fuel break areas. The project is also designed to enhance aspen and whitebark pine stands and to improve wildlife safety.
“The release of the EA and draft FONSI is the culmination of months of analysis by specialists of the alternatives and takes into consideration input we received both from the public during the last comment period and 3 field trips we hosted last summer as well as feedback and critique we have received in coordination with the Custer Gallatin Working Group. Actions associated with the project are critical in restoring aspen on the landscape, improving wildlife habitat and addressing fuels related issues in the WUI,” said Jason Brey, Hebgen Lake District Ranger.
The EA analyzes three action alternatives including Alternative 2, the proposed action and preferred alternative. The alternatives present a range of potential impacts including those associated with proposed temporary roads and level of treatment near the Fir Ridge, Horse Butte, Rainbow Point Campground, Whit’s Lake and Red Canyon Areas. The EA also describes the need for action, the alternatives considered, direct, indirect and cumulative environmental impacts of the action alternatives, and agencies or persons contacted.
The EA, Draft FONSI, and other documents are available for review and comment on the Custer Gallatin National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=45491 .
Written comments on the proposed project will be accepted for 30 calendar days following publication of this notice in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. Information about how to submit comment is also available on the website.
