Lakeview—Fremont-Winema National Forest Supervisor Constance Cummins has announced that Barry Shullanberger has been selected as the new interagency fire staff officer for the 2.3 million-acre national forest and 3.5 million-acre Lakeview District of the Bureau of Land Management.
“We really value the breadth of natural resource management and firefighting experience Barry brings to the Fremont-Winema National Forest and Lakeview District of the BLM,” Cummins said. “He’s an experienced leader with field experience gained over 26 years working in Southern Oregon.”
Shullanberger will now oversee all fire suppression, fuels management and aviation operations for the two federal units. He will also supervise a workforce of 125 U.S. Forest Service and 60 BLM employees.
“I’m really excited to take on this position, and serving Lake and Klamath Counties,” Shullanberger said. “There are many challenges on the fuels management and fire suppression fronts, but I’m ready to do my best to protect communities from wildfire, and improve forest and rangeland health. I’m also looking forward to continuing to develop positive working relationships with all of our cooperators.”
Shullanberger began his firefighting career in 1989 as a fire engine captain on the Fremont National Forest’s Lakeview Ranger District. He later became the district’s assistant fire management officer before completing assignments as its acting fire management officer.
In 2010, Shullanberger was selected as the deputy interagency fire staff officer for fuels management for the Fremont-Winema N.F. and Lakeview District of the BLM where he has served until being selected for his new position.
In addition to his present duties, Shullanberger will continue to serve as a branch director in the operations section of the Pacific Northwest Team-2, a type-1 national incident management team tasked with responding to large-scale natural disasters like wildfires and hurricanes, and other national emergencies.
Shullanberger grew up in Lakeview and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1986. In 1991, he graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor’s of science degree in agriculture.
He is a member of the Lakeview Rotary Club and is the current president of the Fremont Highlanders, which oversees the non-profit Warner Canyon Ski Area near Lakeview. He is also a coach for youth sports.
Shullanberger and his wife Annette have two twin girls. He and his family enjoy working on the Shullanberger Ranch, a cattle and hay ranch his father and brother operate near Lakeview.
