USDA Forest Service Awards Fifteen Local Grants

VANCOUVER, WA--During the past year, the USDA ForestService awarded 15 community and economic development grants totaling over $632,000 toSouthwest Washington local governments under the Forest Service Rural Community AssistanceProgram. The grants will assist funding projects in Klickitat, Lewis, Skamania Wahkiakum,and Pierce Counties. Communities have contributed over $770,000 in matching funds toqualify projects for grant funding.

Gifford Pinchot National Forest communities received 26 percent of thetotal dollars available in Washington State for 1999 under the Northwest EconomicAdjustment Initiative. Communities identified as emphasis areas under the initiativereceived several of the grants.

Gifford Pinchot National Forest Supervisor Claire Lavendel said,"These grants will help local communities develop and diversify their economies. Weare pleased to be a partner in these efforts that will help make Southwest Washingtoncommunities economically stronger and healthier."

The Forest Service Rural Community Assistance Program, part of PresidentClinton's Northwest Forest Plan, is aimed at providing economic stability to Northwestcommunities with ties to the timber industry. The Initiative brings the Forest Servicetogether with eight other Federal agencies, as well as with State and local governments,for funding projects that are community priorities

The grants specifically include:

  • A master plan for the Port of Klickitat at Bingen Point - $24,000

  • A Community Action Plan update for the town of Packwood - $7,500

  • Interpretative signs for the Port waterfront pathway in the town of Stevenson - $14,400

  • A water and engineering study in the community of Home Valley - $22,880

  • A plan for sewer improvements in the town of Pe Ell - $50,000

  • Design work for upgrading the City of Goldendale's wastewater treatment facility - $50,000

  • A feasibility study to connect Highway 12 and SR 504 - $50,000

  • Dallesport Wastewater Facility Plan - $50,000

  • Lewis County Natural Resource Plan - $24,000

  • Port of Chehalis Industrial Park Design and Development - $36,275

  • Port of Skamania County water access study and boat launch design and improvement - $36,000

  • A community-wide clean-up and beautification program in the town of Klickitat - $5,000

  • A Community Action Plan for the town of Eatonville - $15,000

  • A Water Plan for Western Wahkiakum - $47,785

  • The Wind River Nursery conveyance project in Skamania County - $200,000
