Hike the Gila - Glenwood Ranger District

Release Date: Jun 5, 2014

To help outdoor enthusiasts plan their trip to the Gila National Forest, officials are providing information about current conditions across the forest. The third article in the “Hike the Gila” series highlights the Glenwood Ranger District.

While various areas of the Glenwood Ranger District were in some degree impacted by the heavy rain event that occurred last September, many areas were less affected such as the Blue Range Wilderness and the trail system below Aspen Mountain and Saddle Mountain. Restoration work has also occurred on portions of the Holt Apache Trail and Rain Creek Trail.

In addition, one-half mile of the historic Catwalk trail is open. Work to reopen the recreation area includes:

·         Completed channel work to return Whitewater Creek flows to the upper low water crossing.

·         Cleared sediment, logs, and other debris away from picnic tables.

·         Cleared landslides and stabilized handrails along the historic trail from the picnic area to the steps constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

·         Removed metal debris from the picnic area and channel.

Though the majority of trails are open, users need to be prepared for less than ideal conditions on some trails.  There are portions of trails that have debris dams, landslides, and trees across them.  Users should bring a map and/or GPS unit and leave a trip plan with a friend or family member along with a planned return date.

Remember, lightning is common during the summer rainy season. If possible, plan travel on high ground and open areas early in the day before the afternoon cumulus cloud buildup.

Fire restrictions remain in effect across the forest. Details are posted on the forest website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/gila/under alerts & warnings. For more information, call the Glenwood Ranger District at 575-539-2481.
