Lightning Strike Starts Fire on the Gunnison Ranger District

Gunnison, Colorado, July 11, 2019 – The Rock Springs Fire was discovered July 10 at 6:30 p.m. It is burning in the West Elk Wilderness approximately 7 miles northeast of Coal Mesa/Cow Creek Trailhead and approximately 4 miles southwest of Bonfish Peak. There are no structures threatened or values at-risk at this time. Firefighters are allowing the fire to play its natural role in the ecosystem – continuing to assess fire behavior and weather – while they work to protect economic and recreation values.
