Forest Service to conduct prescribed burn in Craig County, Va, Thursday, March 16, 2023

Release Date: Mar 15, 2023

Location: The 737-acre Sinking Creek burn is located east of County Road 621 directly adjacent to the Caldwell Fields recreation area on Forest Road 630.

Date and Time: The Forest Service plans to begin ignitions on March 16, 2023, if weather conditions are appropriate. The ignition-phase will be concluded in one day; however, residents and forest visitors may see and smell smoke from this prescribed burn for several days.

Objective: Prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat by restoring open woodlands and grasslands to the forest landscape. Prescribed burns also keep the public and homes safe by reducing the buildup of dried leaves and wood in nearby forest land that can lead to uncontrolled wildfires.

Additional Information: Smoke may be visible along Forest Road 360 and County Road 621 for the duration of the burn.

For more information on our prescribed burn program, please contact the Eastern Divide Ranger District office at 540-552-4641,  visit the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest website, or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
