Current Status

Fire is located just west of the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area, off of the Bear Wallow and Signal Knob Trails. 

 Estimated Acreage

166  acres


60% contained as of  8-16-2011

Cause and Date Started

The fire was called in at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, August 11, 2011. It was started by lightning.   


Resources on the Fire

There are approximately 50 people on the fire including two type 2 twenty person crews.

Restrictions and Closures

Signal Knob Trailhead is closed to public use.  Portions of the Tuscarora Trail – Bear Wallow Section are also closed. 


Plans for



Fire crews are planning a 23 acre burnout today.  Crews will also hold existing containment lines, conduct mop-up operations and cut snags as necessary to strengthen containment lines.

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming south between 4 and 7 mph.

Tonight: A slight chance of showers after midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 64. Light south wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Thursday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
