Firewood Cutting Areas Identified Near Townsend

Release Date: Jul 6, 2017

Townsend, MONT., July 6, 2017—Not sure where to cut firewood on the Townsend Ranger District? We have a spot you should check out: the North Fork of Deep Creek to Cabin Gulch area! Cabin Gulch timber sale activities have been completed and the area is now open for firewood cutting.

There are abundant firewood opportunities adjacent to and near Forest Service roads that are open, including Forest Service Roads: #423-North Fork to Cabin Gulc Loop Road; #4181-West Fork cabin Gulch; and the following spur roads #423-F1, K1, and L1, all of which are off of the main Forest Service Road #423.

However, please be advised that the blowdown areas on the Holloway Road #4178 are NOT available for firewood cutting, since those areas are part of a commercial timber sale.

Standing dead trees and downed trees are available for woodcutters with a Forest Service firewood permit, which allows the permit holder to cut four cords of wood for $20. Firewood permits are available at the Townsend Ranger District office at 415 South Front Street or at Townsend’s Tru-Value Hardware Store on Highway 287.

Firewood cutters need to follow all of the conditions within their permit to ensure there is no excessive damage or necessary clean-up resulting from firewood cutting activities. In particular: vehicles should be pulled to the side of the road to avoid blocking other traffic; trim slash into smaller pieces and scatter or pile the slash well so it isn’t on roads/trails and doesn’t clog drainage ditches; be aware if there are any fire restrictions; and do not cut any trees over fencelines, riparian areas, roads or other infrastructure.

If people have questions, contact the Townsend Ranger District office at 406-266-3425.
