On Saturday, September 24th, join the Hiawatha National Forest for National Public Lands Day (NPLD) native seed harvesting. The seed is for future restoration work across the Forest. Using local seed when planting maintains distinctive genetic populations.
The Munising and Rapid River/Manistique Ranger Districts botany staff are celebrating their 18th NPLD event. An estimated 180,000 volunteers around the nation build trails and bridges, plant trees, shrubs and native pollinator plants, harvest native seed and remove trash from streams, lakes and public lands on NPLD in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
To join the fun, meet at the opening on the east side of intersection M-94 (Schoolcraft Co.) and County Road 437 (Thunder Lake Road) by 12:45 p.m. People can car pool to the harvest site off Forest Road 2647. If coming from Manistique the opening is approximately 25 miles north on M-94 and 3 miles north of Jack Pine Lodge and from Shingleton the site is 12 miles south on M-94. If it rains the harvest is postponed. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and appropriate field clothes for walking in tall grasses on uneven ground. Some harvest is from the roadside of FR2647 which provides a good walking surface. Drinking water will be provided along with all gear needed for seed harvesting.
