Kid’s Free Fishing Derby on Hoosier National Forest

Tell City, IN –  If you’re a kid who likes to fish, or know a kid who might, the Hoosier National Forest invites you to the 20th annual Kid’s Fishing Derby at GERMAN RIDGE POND near Rome, Indiana on Saturday, May 16th. The event is free and will be open to all children ages 15 and under.

The event, held at German Ridge Pond is located within the German Ridge Recreation Area off State Road 66. Parking will be within the campground or day use area. Employees will be onsite to assist with the parking. Participants can walk or be shuttled from the parking areas to the fishing pond.

The day includes fishing, games, prizes, a casting contest, and a fish biology presentation. Please bring your own rods, reels, fishing tackle, and bait. There are no restrictions on tackle or bait, but no bait will be provided. Children are allowed one rod each.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Sign-in and registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. The fishing contest will begin at 9:00 a.m. and go until 11:00 a.m. There will be a break during this fishing heat to see live fish and hear a talk by a Fish Biologist.

At 11:00 the kids can participate in a casting contest, crafts, and other activity booths until lunch and awards at noon. Lunch will be provided by the Perry County Bass Masters. The event is also sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife.

The Hoosier asks that people pre-register by calling the Tell City Ranger Station at (812) 547-7051 or by stopping by the office at 248 15th Street, Tell City, Indiana.

The Perry County Bass Masters will net, weigh, and release each fish caught, with minimal impact to the fish. The Hoosier National Forest, IDNR, and the Perry County Bass Masters have a strong commitment to America’s youth and are proud to celebrate with an unforgettable day of fishing for kids and their families.
