Release Date: Aug 1, 2014

Lightning-caused Day and Bald fires in northeastern California have increased in size and evacuations have been ordered for two communities, while crews have contained smaller fires across the region protected by Susanville Interagency Fire Center (SIFC) agencies.

The Day Fire, near the community of Day northeast of Fall River Mills, is more than 7,000 acres and remains at five percent contained. A mandatory evacuation was ordered this afternoon for residents in the Lookout Ranchettes, while the evacuation order for homes along Day Road was lifted. Modoc County Roads 93 and 94 are closed at the junction of the two routes. More than 680 firefighters are assigned, along with more than 70 fire engines, helicopters and air tankers.

An evacuation center is available at the Adin Community Center on South Main Street in Adin. Evacuation information is available from the Modoc County Office of Emergency Services at (530) 233-5342.

The Bald Fire on the Lassen National Forest has grown to about 5,000 acres. It is burning brush and timber about eight miles south of Fall River Mills. It has spread northeast from Bald Mountain. Evacuations have been ordered for the community of Little Valley.

Firefighters are also responding to two new fires in the Thousand Lakes Wilderness area of the Lassen National Forest. The fires are several miles apart and totaled about 90 acres this afternoon. Trails in the Thousand Lakes Wilderness are closed.

Crews are continuing to work on a fire above Elysian Valley near Janesville. The 1-14 Fire is about five acres, burning in timber. There are four crews, four fire engines, two water tenders and two helicopters assigned to the fire. Air tankers completed retardant lines around the fire today and ground crews are working to complete fire lines. There are no structures threatened.

Storms touched off 19 fires in the Honey Lake Valley yesterday afternoon and evening, and officials from SIFC said most have been contained.

Fire information is available at (530) 252-6450 and online at www.inciweb.nwcg.gov (Bald) and www.cdfdata.fire.ca.gov (Day).

Fire officials urge area residents and visitors to be careful with any outdoor use of fire. Wildland conditions are extremely dry and firefighting resources are heavily committed.
