Alamogordo, NM (March 9, 2012) – Updated Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) are now available at all Lincoln National Forest offices and in various other locations, such as chambers of commerce and outdoor stores in southern New Mexico.  These maps display roads and trails within the Lincoln National Forest which are open to motorized uses such as highway vehicles, 4 wheel drive, OHV’s and motorcycles. They also display where you may dispersed (or road-side) camp.  There are two maps, one for the Smokey Bear and Sacramento Ranger Districts, the other for the Guadalupe Ranger District.  These maps are free to all.

While updates to the 2012 map are minor, Robert Trujillo, Forest Supervisor adds, “The 2012 version of our MVUM shows the legal motorized travel system for the Lincoln National Forest.  Roads and trails designated on this map are open for use.  If a road or trail is not designated on this map, it is not open for use, even though it may look like a road on the ground.”  Suggestions for future changes to the forest transportation system may be sent to any Lincoln National Forest office for consideration.
