Fire Update in PDF Format

(WALDEN, Colo.) July 30, 2016 – Weather continued to be a key factor affecting suppression efforts yesterday. Hot, dry winds pushed across the area further drying fuels. Abundant, dry fuels and shifting, gusty winds combined to support very active fire behavior.

This weather pattern will continue today with temperatures in the mid-70s and humidity in the low teens. Winds are expected to come from the west – northwest, with afternoon gusts as high as 40 miles per hour.

An Infrared (IR) Flight was performed last night. Initial flight data indicated the fire had grown significantly, up 4,453 acres from the previous figure. After further analysis and interpretation of the IR information, the acreage figure has been revised to 31,216, or 1,079 acres more than the previous day.

Fire behavior is expected to be active and wind driven spotting as far as a ½ mile, continues to be a concern. Firefighters are working to construct containment line in order to stop the fire as it emerges from heavily wooded areas with abundant beetle killed trees.

Beaver Creek fire meteorologists are predicting the current weather pattern will begin to moderate Sunday. Thunderstorms will move into the area raising humidity and lowering temperatures.

Incident Commander Jon Warder took a moment during his morning briefing to thank firefighters for the skill and good judgment they have demonstrated saying, "There were some really good decisions made out there (on the fire), and I appreciate what you've accomplished. We're fighting this fire using smart tactics, we're making progress on suppression and no one has been seriously injured in the process. Keep up the good work!"
