Fire Update in PDF Format

(WALDEN, Colo.) Aug. 11, 2016 – A storm passed through the area yesterday between 5 and 6 pm.  A lightning strike started a fire in heavy dead and down timber along County Road 4, just south of the Colorado/Wyoming state line, two miles east of Highway 125 near the Granger Ranch. Fortunately, several helicopters from the Beaver Creek Fire were nearby and quickly assisted local resources allowing the new fire to be contained at 2-3 acres.

The most active fire behavior was in the northern portion of the fire in the area of the 498 Road/ Big Creek Road.  Air resources were used in that area on small spot fires north of the road.

Weather:  Scattered showers occurred over portions of the fire late in the afternoon and early evening yesterday. The showers brought small amounts of rain and some lightning. Today, temperatures should be in the upper 60s to lower 70s.  Winds are expected to be out of the west-southwest at 10-15 mph with gusts to 35 mph.  Scattered showers are expected again today after 2 pm. Increasing cloud cover should occur during the day and a cold front is expected to pass after midnight.

Structure Protection: The structure group continues their assessments of potential for structure protection needs and identifying an evacuation plan for the area northeast of the fire. In some areas, equipment such as hose and sprinklers are being moved to areas where the need may be more critical. Maintenance of this type of equipment is occurring where the fire has potential to test firelines.

Today: Cloud cover is expected to moderate fire behavior today and most activity is expected to be in the down and dead timber.

Early today, firefighters will find and contain a spot fire approximately 100 feet across the 498/Big Creek Road early today. The spot fire is located within an area that is already surrounded by a contingency line and the 498 Road.  Hose lays will be installed on the contingency line today. In quieter areas of the fire, firefighters will monitor and patrol, repair forest roads, remove hazard trees along roads and return unneeded equipment to the Incident Command Post.

A masticator and bulldozers have constructed lines north of 498/Big Creek Road forming 4 compartments that can catch the fire if it crosses the road.

A community meeting was held last night in Walden.  The public was provided information and questions were answered.
