Summary:
Overnight temperatures were in the low 30’s, humidities were high, and winds were light resulting in a quiet night on the fireline. Today, skies will be mostly clear with the potential for storm buildup in the afternoon. Wetting rains are unlikely to occur, although more monsoonal moisture is expected to push into the region late in the week bringing better chances for precipitation.
The high temperature today will be near 80F and minimum humidity will be in the upper teens. Winds will be light and out of the south and southeast this morning, turning north after 12:00 p.m. These conditions should allow firefighters to burnout the southern and southwest portions of the fire along the USFS 586 and 512 roads. The total burnout acreage could be up to approximately 200 acres. Aerial ignition may be used for areas too hazardous for firefighters on foot to enter.
This morning, crews will be in the Keystone Community area looking for dangerous dead standing trees in proximity to structures and roads. Firefighters will cut these snags, assisted by heavy equipment such as a feller buncher and skidder.
Along the north and east portions of the fire, crews will continue to monitor the perimeter searching for hot spots. Hand crews and heavy timber equipment will continue to clear dead and down trees along the USFS roads 513 and 500. These roads will be temporarily closed to non-fire traffic for the safety of the firefighters and the public.
Fire managers, along with the Albany County Sheriff’s Department, will continue to discuss if evacuation orders can be lifted. As soon as it is safe to do so, orders will be lifted and residents may reoccupy their homes.
A fire area closure remains in place for the safety of firefighters and the public. The remainder of the Medicine Bow–Routt National Forests are open and ready for the public to visit.
