Badger Creek Fire Update

July 15, 2018

SW Wyoming Type 3 Incident Management Team 1, Incident Commander Willy Watsabaugh

Badger Creek Fire Statistics:

Start Date: June 10, 2018

Start Location: 2 miles NW of Mountain Home, WY

Approximate size: 21,310 acres

Approximate containment: 90%

Cause: Under Investigation
Assigned Personnel: 159

Current Situation: Yesterday, firefighters were finding new pockets of heat north, northeast of Gramm. They utilized chainsaw teams to safely get into areas to suppress those hot spots. During the hottest portion of the day, two small smoke columns were visible. Firefighters will continue to suppress hot spots that could threaten the containment lines and structures, and monitor the others that do not pose a threat. Today’s weather forecast is for scattered rain showers and thunderstorms with slightly cooler temperatures.

Rain in the forecast, means flash flooding is a concern. Flash flooding and debris flows can happen very quickly and without warning when thunderstorms are in the area and produce a measurable amount of precipitation. Avoid areas that are down valley from steep hill sides and drainages during heavy rains. Seek higher ground immediately during a flash flood. The public is encouraged to listen to weather radios, radio stations and sign-up for the National Weather Service’s Weather Alert notification. You can sign-up by going to https://www.weather.gov/alerts. Other ways are following them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/NWSCheyenne and Twitter at https://twitter.com/NWSCheyenne.

Closures and Public Safety: The Emergency Closure is still in place and prohibits all public foot, bicycle, and vehicle traffic, along with drones. This includes all spur roads and trails that enter into the burned area, with the exception of authorized emergency resources on official duty and persons with a permit specifically authorizing them to be there. This closure allows firefighters to continue their work on the fire. The closure order and map are available on InciWeb.

Fire Restrictions: Stage 1 fire restrictions went into effect on July 5, 2018 on all National Forest System lands within the Sierra Madre Range and Snowy Range on the Medicine Bow National Forest. For more information and details, visit the Badger Creek Fire’s Inciweb closure link at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/5836/43668/.

Strategy: The Badger Creek Fire has been a full suppression fire from the time of initial response. Firefighters will implement strategies and tactics with the highest probability of success to protect values at risk.
