Mt. Baker Highway (State Route 542) Conditions

These reports are updated weekly through forest visitor reports. Please call ranger stations to give a report after your hike or send an  email. Please contact the Mt. Baker Ranger District  at 360-856-5700 ext. 515 or Glacier Public Service Center at 360-599-2714 for detailed conditions.
 

Road & Trail Status Definitions

• OPEN - No restrictions, forest visitors can drive the road or hike the trail.
• UNREACHABLE - Forest visitors can only drive or hike part of the trail because of snow, trail damage, wildlife habitat or road or trail is not reachable because of damage or closures on roads or trails leading to it.
• CLOSED - Road or trail closed because of forest closures, wildlife habitat, road damage, gates or barriers. Forest visitors cannot drive any part of the road or hike any part of the trail.
• NOT CLEARED - Road or trail is snow covered or not brushed out but still open.
• INACCESSIBLE - Road or trail not reachable because of road damage or closures on roads or trails leading to it.
• TEMP CLOSED – Road or trail construction closing access.
• UNKNOWN – Status of road or trail not known at this time.
 

Road Conditions    

Snow still lingers at elevations above 4,500 feet. Be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather, conditions can be hazardous if you are not prepared. Bring extra clothing, food, water, blankets, first aid kit and let someone know your destination and expected day/time of return.

Trail Conditions    

Mt. Baker / Heather Meadows

There is about 6 feet of snow at elevation 4,260 feet near the upper ski area lodge in the Heather Meadows Area, but snow gets deeper as elevation increases. The Mt. Baker Ski Area is now open for the winter. A Recreation Pass will not be required in the Heather Meadows US Fee Area until the summer season. Bring extra clothing, food, water, first aid kit and let someone know your destination and expected day/time of return. Backcountry travelers need to be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather, route finding, and travel in avalanche terrain. Trails in the Heather Meadows area are not marked in the winter.

North Fork Nooksack River

While snow coverage in the North Fork Nooksack drainage is at around 50% of an average year, backcountry users still need to be prepared for route finding and snow travel through avalanche terrain on all trails above 3,500 feet elevation. All trails accessed from SR542 are closed to stock until August 1. Bring extra clothing, food, water, and a first aid kit and let someone know your destination and expected day/time of return.
