The Bessey Ranger District and Nursery are located one mile west of Halsey, Nebraska.  Halsey is located in the central part of the state in the scenic Sandhills.  Halsey has a population of approximately 60, a post office, a tavern/restaurant, and a motel. 


The surrounding communities have banks, grocery stores, gas stations, county government offices, and churches.  The nearest full-service communities include Broken Bow (55 miles), Valentine (70 miles), and North Platte (80 miles).  The primary industry in this area is ranching.


The average high in January is about 32 degrees and in July it is close to 90 degrees. Average rainfall is 21 inches per year, and average snowfall is 31 inches.  The elevation is 2880 feet above sea level.
