Gun Club fire - Evening Update - August 19, 2016

Today firefighters and aerial resources continued to keep the fire south of Lightning Creek, north and east of the Salmon River, and west of Little Berg Creek. Crews secured lines constructed yesterday and continued fireline along the north perimeter. On the east flank of the fire perimeter, firefighting resources successfully constructed line to the main Salmon River.
Irv Leach’s Type 2 Incident Management Team will assume command of the fire tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m.
The Gun Club fire is located 1 mile west of the Time Zone Bridge and is visible from the community of Riggins, Idaho. It is burning in very steep grassy terrain and includes locations that are not safe or accessible to firefighters. Firefighter and public safety are the agencies top priority in wildland fire management. Agency administrators and incident managers make choices to minimize risk and focus on areas where firefighters can be the most effective.
Closures: An area closure is in effect. The closure area to the north includes trail 82 (closed), a portion of trail 136 (closed), to the east it includes a portion of trail 118 (closed) and is bordered by FS Road 221 (road 221, Grangeville-Salmon, is open), the southern border is road 1614 (road 1614 is open) and the perimeter to the west is the forest boundary. FS Road, 263 lies within the perimeter and is closed.
Rafters and others using the Lower Salmon should be very conscientious of firefighting efforts, yielding the river to helicopters that may be dipping in the river. Float groups are advised to stay together and not stop to watch the aerial support activities. Rafters should pull over temporarily if they come upon a helicopter already dipping in the river, then continue through the area as quickly as possible as when the helicopter leaves.
Motorists are urged to use caution, drive slowly, and avoid pull-outs along Highway 95 near Lucille, Idaho. Please do not stop along the highway to view fire operations.
A temporary flight restriction is in effect. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or drones are prohibited. Unauthorized UAS flights over or near a wildfire could cause serious injury or death to firefighters in the air and/or firefighters and members of the public on the ground and suspend aerial operations. The bottom line is that “If you fly, we can’t.”
