Nez Perce-Clearwater Forests Fire Information Update

Grangeville Dispatch responded to two wildfires yesterday. 

Eagle Fire

Narrative:  The Fire was discovered at 1:54 pm yesterday afternoon. The Location is near Eagle point Lookout on the North Fork Ranger District. Initial attack crews hiked through steep rugged timbered forest 3 to 4 miles to the fire from the Canyon Work center. The fire is burning in heavy fuels and is currently approximately 1 acre in size. The terrain is so steep that there is no temporary landing spots (helispot) for helicopters. Seven additional firefighters are hiking to the fire this morning. The McCall Type 1 helicopter is committed to the fire this morning to assist with water bucket work. The fire has a full suppression management strategy. The steep, rugged terrain is the primary safety concern. 

Current Size: Estimated 1 acre.  Containment:  0% 

Resources on Fire:  Initial attack personnel. One Type 1 helicopter. A 7-person hand crew is in route and are expected to later this morning.  

Terrain:  Extremely steep, rocky, and inaccessible terrain.  More than 3 miles from the nearest trail.  

Fire Activity:  Creeping with some isolated torching. 

Safety Concerns:  Firefighter safety remains a primary concern due to the remote location and steep and rugged terrain.   

Closures:  There is no immediate threat to structures or closures at this time.  

Central Grade Fire

Narrative: Reported at 6:23 pm yesterday afternoon, the fire is approximately 2500 acres as of this morning. Burning in grass on very steep terrain the fire is approximately 70% contained. Interagency response to this Nez Perce Tribe fire began with the Nez Perce Rural Fire District being the first to arrive on the scene. Six Forest Service Smokejumpers jumped the fire last night and have been released from the fire this morning.  The fire is burning on a very steep hillside adjacent to the Clearwater Casino outside of Lewiston ID. US Highways 12 and 95 were temporarily closed yesterday evening as the fire burned down to their edge; they are now both open. 

Current Size: Estimated 2500 acre.  Containment:  70% 

Resources on Fire:  The Nez Perce Tribe is managing the fire with a Type 4 Incident command structure including miscellaneous overhead. Additional resources include Two 20 person Forest Service Fire Crews, eight engines: 1 Nez Perce, 4 Idaho Dept. of Lands & 3 Forest Service. Two Forest Service Helicopters: one Type 3 and one Type 1. Two Forest Service Single Engine Air Tankers. One Forest Service Air Attack and one Clearwater Potlatch Timber Protection Association (CPTPA) dozer.  Nez Perce Rural Fire District personnel are still on scene. An Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team is scheduled to take command of the incident at 10:30 this morning. 

Terrain:  Extremely steep, canyon terrain. 

Fire Activity:  Grass, flashy fuel with tall flame lengths. 

Safety Concerns:  Firefighter safety remains a primary concern due to the steep terrain.  Closures:  US highways 12 and 95 had been closed temporarily yesterday evening. There are no closures at this time.  There is no immediate threat to structures at this time.
