Thinning Operations along Hwy 89 - Trailhead Closures for Public Safety
Release Date: Jan 18, 2019
Contact(s): Debbie Maneely, 928-443-8130
For approximately the next 3-4 weeks, the White Spar Trailhead and associated trails will be closed, as contractors continue work on the Schoolhouse Stewardship Project. Please do not enter areas where the heavy equipment is operating. Approaching such equipment is very dangerous as the operator may not see you. In addition, there will be increased truck traffic and noise adjacent to White Spar Campground and Highway 89. Measures will be taken to protect the surface of the trails and impacts will be remedied by the contractor and the Forest Service as needed. Area Map (142 KB PDF)
Thinning operations are dependent on weather and soil conditions, but visitors can expect equipment to be in the area for the next 2-4 months. Until mechanical operations are concluded, estimated to be in early March, Forest Managers recommend that visitors take advantage of recreational opportunities within the Copper Basin or Spence Basin trail systems.
The intent of the project is to improve the health and resiliency of fire-adapted ecosystems while simultaneously reducing hazardous fuels that pose a threat to life and property in the Wildland-Urban Interface.
