CIMARRON NATIONAL GRASSLAND IMPLEMENTS EMERGENCY CLOSURE

ELKHART, Kan., January 5, 2016 – The Cimarron National Grassland implemented an Emergency Closure in Morton County, Kansas on December 18, 2015 after six cattle were found dead within the closure area.

The Cimarron National Grassland imposed an Emergency Order for the purpose of public safety on four sections of National Grassland that includes the Stirrup Oil Field located along the Cimarron River Corridor north of Rolla, Kansas.  The closure involves all motorized and non-motorized access from December 18, 2015 through May 1, 2016, or until rescinded.

This Order is necessary to ensure public safety due to potential hazardous airborne conditions that may be present.  The conditions surrounding the livestock deaths are currently being investigated.  Once no threat to public safety can be verified, the Closure Order will be rescinded

Questions regarding this Order can be directed to Cimarron National Grassland District Ranger, Lance Brown, PO Box 300, 242 Hwy 56 E., Elkhart, KS  67950, or by telephone (620) 697-4621 or email to lanbrown@fs.fed.us.
