PUEBLO, Colo., February 25, 2021 – The Pike and San Isabel National Forests Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands Comanche National Grassland District, is preparing to conduct eight prescribed fires in Baca County Colorado in the next few weeks.
The planned projects involve broadcast burning to enhance ecosystem health, improve Lesser Prairie Chicken habitat and reduce hazardous fuel accumulations. Skilled fire crews will be on-scene to conduct ignitions, ensure the burns meet objectives, and monitor the burn after completion. Locations in Baca County are:
- Six miles SW of Campo (Lyons Camp) 473 acres
- Eight miles WSW of Springfield (Packstring) 584 acres
- Six miles SE of Pritchett (Shooting Range) 631 acres
- Eight miles SE of Campo (Sunflower) 492 acres
- Four miles SW of Campo (Deweese) 346 acres
- Fifteen miles S of Pritchett (Galleta) 562 acres
If burning does take place, it may continue for several days. Smoke may linger in the air after ignition is complete and may be visible from many locations surrounding the Baca County area. Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. For more information see: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/cdphe/wood-smoke-and-health.
