Comments Sought on Monarch Expansion

SALIDA, Colo., February 23, 2012 – Monarch Mountain is proposing an expansion of its day-use lodge building located at the ski area. Monarch Mountain operates under a special-use permit with the U.S. Forest Service – Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands – Salida Ranger District.

The proposal calls for increasing the square footage of the existing lodge from 22,890 square feet to 39,114 square feet. The increase in space will add 808 additional seats for visitors. Seating in the cafeteria will increase to nearly 500, and the sack lunch room will increase by 200 seats. The Sidewinder Saloon will add an additional 100 seats. All of these facilities will be accessible through an interior stairwell as well as access that will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations and guidelines.

A draft memorandum detailing the proposal is available for review at the Salida Ranger District office located at 325 W. Rainbow Blvd. in Salida, CO.  Written comments will be accepted on this project until March 16, 2012.  Hand delivered comments may be submitted during normal business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Please contact Mike Picard, Environmental Coordinator, at 719-530-3959 with questions regarding this project.
