Afognak Village Cultural Landscape
Afognak Village Church
1000 BP – 1980s AD
Afognak Village has been a center of Alutiiq community and culture in the Kodiak Archipelago for thousands of years. Afognak was a hub of activity for agriculture, education, and the Russian Orthodox Church. Alutiiq residents retained many traditional aspects of subsistence and language even with the influx of Russian, Scandinavian, and other Euro-American influences from the late 1700s to the middle of the 20th century.
Site connection to the National Historic Preservation Act
Section 106 helped document the historic village before undertakings took place on native allotments within the village.
Read aloud by the Juneau Community Charter School 4/5 grade class.
