Description: Steep Creek Fish Viewing Site provides visitors to the Mendenhall Valley with the opportunity to view spawning sockeye and coho salmon. The best place to view the salmon is along the Moraine Ecology Trail. The site features an accessible viewing platform with interpretive signs. An underwater "fish cam" provides realtime video from the salmon stream. The "fish cam" can be viewed near the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

Viewing Information:Steep Creek contains runs of sockeye and coho salmon as well as Dolly Varden char and occasionally cutthroat trout, and pink, king, and chum salmon. Adult sockeye (red) salmon are the first to enter Steep Creek and are generally seen in the lower glacial kettle ponds in the first week of July. They can be seen spawning in Steep Creek from mid-July to mid-September. The first coho (silver) salmon usually arrive in mid to late-September and can be seen throughout October.

Safety First: hypothermia can strike in any season. Wear appropriate clothing and be prepared for inclement weather.

Fees, Passes and Permits: Black Bear Viewing: Black bears frequent the area from late July to mid-September, depending on salmon runs. To ensure visitor safety, no food is allowed at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center or on the surrounding trails complex. No dogs allowed on Steep Creek Trail May 1 to Sept. 30.
