Centralized Temporary Hiring

A Forest Service employee discussing natural resouces with two peopleThe Southwestern Region Centralized Temporary Hiring program streamlines the hiring process for temporary fire, forestry and other positions. This hiring process assists the national forests in the Southwestern Region to fill vacancies in a more efficient and timely manner.

The outreach includes GS and WG positions grade 02 through 07 covered by the Open Continuous Rosters. Application deadline has been extended to January 11, 2013.

The Process and Timeline


December 11—Outreach begins. The Outreach Notice lists all temporary  vacancies and locations from the GS and WG, 02 through 07 levels.  NOTE: Not all vacancy announcements are available at the opening of this Outreach period.  The announcements should be available to applicants soon.

Applicant applies

January 11, 2013—Application deadline. Apply through USAJobs.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for multiple locations--only locations where you would accept a position if offered, even if vacancies for certain locations are not listed as vacant, as vacancies may occur during the hiring process and could be filled during selection week.

January 28February 1, 2012Application evaluation. Subject matter experts will generate reference evaluations for use by selecting officials.


February 48, 2013Selections. Representative from each forest will make recommendations for hiring.

Forest Service representatives will notify selected applicants by phone. Applicants not selected will be notified by email.

First Effective Date. Contact the supervisor or Ranger District office for more information on the effective date.
