May 19th Public Meeting on Hermosa Creek Special Management Area Plan
Release Date: Apr 14, 2015
The San Juan National Forest will hold a public meeting from 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19th, regarding the preparation of a management plan for the newly created Hermosa Creek Special Management Area. The meeting will be held in the Sonoran Rooms at the San Juan Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court, Durango. The meeting will continue public scoping for the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, which is required for preparation of the management plan.
The Forest Service will offer a presentation summarizing the recent legislation, current management, and some known issues to be addressed. Possible itineraries for public field trips this summer will also be discussed. The Hermosa Creek Watershed Protection legislation, signed by President Barack Obama in December, 2014, requires the Forest Service to complete a management plan within three years for the 70,000-acre+ Special Management Area. The management plan will serve as official guidance for the long-term protection and management of the Special Management Area.
