Volunteers Sought to Help Improve National Forest Land

SANTA FE, NM – May 8, 2018 – For Immediate Release. Spring is here, which means it’s time for volunteers to support trail work projects with U.S. Forest Service personnel on the Santa Fe National Forest. From trails maintenance to cattle guard installations, volunteers provide an invaluable service to summer recreation, and to forest health and sustainability. The opportunities are:

  • Wilderness Information Specialists (WISe) - provide information at wilderness trailheads on wilderness education and answer questions

  • Administration - dataentry

  • Employee volunteer programs - trail maintenance/construction, trash pick-up, or get your employees together and adopt a trail.

Saturday, May 12 - Join the fun at the Borrego/Bear Wallow trailhead located at the top of Hyde Memorial State Park. Help improve the reroute in the meadow above the Borrego/Winsor intersection from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., which includes the 45 minute hike to and from the work area. Saturday, June 2 – Help install rolling cross overs (cattle guards) and tread work from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Norski trailhead parking lot. RSVP to info@santafefattiresociety.org.

Saturday, June 2 National Trails Day event: A workday is planned on the Winsor Trail. Make reservations through info@santafefattiresociety.org.

Saturday, June 9 – Should forest conditions permit, this will become a repeat of the May 12 work day to continue efforts on the Borrego/Bear Wallow trailhead from 8:45 to 3:00 p.m. RSVP to info@santafefattiresociety.org.

Volunteers need long sleeve shirts, long pants, above-ankle non-skid boots and leather gloves to protect them from terrain that can be thorny and rocky. Bring a backpack with a sack lunch, at least three liters of water and sunscreen.
