SFNF Warns Visitors about Bad Road Conditions on Cuba Ranger District
Release Date: May 24, 2019
Contact(s): Julie Anne Overton
Santa Fe, NM – May 24, 2019 – Unseasonal weather on the Cuba Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest, including snow earlier in the week, has created treacherous road conditions across the Cuba Ranger District.
The latest round of moisture on top of a wet winter and heavy spring runoff has left many Forest Service roads and trails waterlogged, muddy and, in many instances, underwater.
District staff are taking a look at conditions across the Cuba District and considering road closures under a seasonal closure order that protects public health and safety, natural resources and infrastructure during periods of extreme soil moisture.
In advance of the popular three-day Memorial Day weekend, the SFNF is asking visitors to stay off impacted roads. Please use your judgement and common sense to avoid permanently damaging the roads or getting stuck.
Law enforcement officers, fire personnel and recreation staff will be patrolling over the Memorial Day weekend to ensure visitor safety.
For additional information please contact the Cuba Ranger District at 575-289-3264.
